Dr. Lenore M. Kelly was a beloved sociology professor at St. Joseph's University’s Brooklyn campus for more thn 20 years. She lived a life where she not only embraced change but also strove to affect it.
Her passion was in the field of Hispanic studies and the furtherance of services for immigrant women. She brought her love for these subjects and her life experiences to her classroom.
S. Marie Mackey, one of her students, remembers the impact Dr. Kelly had on her: “Lenore was my sociology class professor. She opened up a new world for me, learning about the uniqueness of different groups in our society and in the world. Her class had me riveted as I listened to her stories and thoughtful presentations.”
Dr. Kelly would eventually become the chair of the sociology department and conducted the demographic study that was instrumental in the University choosing to open the Patchogue campus. As a former Sister of St. Joseph, she was dedicated to the furtherance of education and chose to continue that legacy of change by leaving a bequest in her estate to St. Joseph's University.
Dr. Kelly left a percentage of her estate to continue the University’s mission. Her generous gift will help fund some of the highest priorities, such as scholarships and financial aid. Dr. Kelly’s everlasting estate gift along with others will help keep education at St. Joseph's University, New York, affordable for generations to come.
